This is such a beautiful approach to life, one which so many of us take for granted.Now firmly established as one of the world’s greatest photographers, Saul Leiter (1923–2013) was relatively little known until the 2006 publication of Saul Leiter: Early Color, when he was already in his eighties. “If I had to choose between being successful or not having someone, I’d prefer to choose someone to care for and someone who cares about me.” “Many of the things that people worry about are not worth worry about it.” ‘If you don’t have a heart you’re very lucky” Saul LetierĪn interesting perspective on life and what we do and don’t reveal to the world. ‘We like to pretend that what is out in the open is true.’ ‘I did things because I enjoyed doing them’. “The real world is more about what is hidden’. His sense of contentment with life and gratitude towards the simpler things, are surely what my peer was referring to when he recommended him to me. “I aspire to be unimportant” Saul LetierĪbove are some of the quotes from Letier that really stood out to me. “I have not spent my life feeling important”. He is so humble with his approach to his work that he is angered by questions asking him ‘why’. Leiter’s personality is initially portrayed as very chilled, with a lovely warm sense of humour, however he has moments of anger and frustration at the questions asked. Tomas Leach is the Director who has shot this in an expository style documentary, crudely asking questions from behind the camera as Leiter is busy looking though his belongings or taking photos on the street. The documentary is candidly and beautifully shot, with a vintage colour grading.
The documentary itself is broken into 13 lessons in life, based on the content and dialogue shot of Letier as he clears out his New York apartment and talks about his approach to photography. Quite clearly they are distinctly different.
